LIFE RE Mida nelle Buone Pratiche del Progetto Interreg SMART WASTE e nella Piattaforma Europea delle PLP di Interreg Europe!

Il progetto LIFE RE Mida (LIFE14 CCM/IT/000464) ha dimostrato l’applicabilità di due tecnologie a scala industriale per il trattamento del gas di discarica a basso potere calorifico attraverso il processo di biofiltrazione.

In breve, LIFE RE Mida garantisce la riduzione delle emissioni di gas serra dalle discariche in cui il potere calorifico non ha i requisiti per garantirne tecnicamente la combustione.  Se non trattato il gas si disperderebbe in atmosfera, con rischi per l’ambiente e la salute umana. Le soluzioni tecnologiche di biofiltrazione attiva e passiva sviluppate durante il progetto hanno dimostrato un’efficienza di ossidazione biologica del metano superiore all’80% con carichi di metano inferiori a 5 g/(m2 h), una concentrazione di odori inferiore a 300 UO/m3 ed un abbattimento di composti organici volatili non metanici di quasi il 70%. Inoltre attraverso l’analisi del ciclo di vita delle due tecnologie (Life Cycle Assessment – LCA), i risultati del progetto LIFE RE Mida mostrano sia benefici ambientali che economici per la gestione delle discariche nella fase di post-chiusura, sostenendo quindi la Pubblica Amministrazione (PA) ed il settore privato nel garantire il rispetto dell’ordinamento comunitario e nazionale di settore. I risultati di LIFE RE Mida, grazie alla stretta collaborazione con il Ministero dell’ambiente e la Direzione generale ambiente della Commissione europea, sono ora parte della Strategia europea per il metano e dell’ordinamento nazionale italiano (d.lgs n. 121/2020).

Infine, LIFE RE Mida ora è anche tra le buone pratiche della Interreg Europe Policy Learning Platform grazie a due Stakeholder del progetto: DESTEC, che è anche stakeholder del progetto Interreg Europe SMART WASTE, e ARRR, capofila del progetto SMART WASTE. Infatti entrambi hanno proposto LIFE RE Mida come buona pratica del programma Interreg Europe e LIFE RE Mida, dopo l’approvazione di Interreg Europe e della Policy Learning Platform (PLP) di Interreg Europe è ora una buona pratica sia del progetto SMART WASTE che della PLP di Interreg Europe, disponibile all’intera comunità di Interreg Europe.

LIFE RE Mida Project (LIFE14 CCM/IT/000464) developed full-scale technologies for the treatment of low-calorific value landfill gas (LFG) in managed and unmanaged landfills.

LIFE RE Mida enables the reduction of greenhouse gases (GHGs) emissions from landfills. The project focused on the treatment of low-calorific value LFG for which the combustion is technically impracticable and LFG is often vented without treatment posing risk to human health and to the environment. The technological solution studied in LIFE RE Mida demonstrated a methane oxidation efficiency above 80% if methane load is less than 5 g/(m² h), an odour concentration lower than 300 UO/m³ and an abatement of non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOCs) of almost 70%.

LIFE RE Mida provides environmental safety and cost-effective management of closed landfills, also supporting both public authorities and the private sector in compliance with European and national regulations.

Thanks to a strong collaboration between the Italian Ministry of Environment (MATTM), and the Directorate of Environment (DG-ENV) of the European Commission LIFE RE Mida technologies are now included in the EU Strategy on methane. In addition, thanks to the collaboration with Tuscany Region, the Italian law in the d.lgs n.121/2020 allowed the use of biofiltration in landfills with a methane production lower than 0.001 Nm³/m²/h.

Thanks to DESTEC  as a regional stakeholder of the Interreg Europe Project SMART WASTE, LIFE RE Mida Project was proposed, together with the support of SMART WASTE lead partner ARRR, to the Joint Secretariat of the Interreg Europe Programme for validation as a good practice for the Interreg Europe community. After validation by both the Joint Secretariat policy officer of Interreg Europe and the Interreg Europe Policy Learning Platform thematic experts, LIFE RE Mida is now a good practice of the SMART WASTE project and of the Policy Learning Platform of Interreg Europe, being available for the whole Interreg Europe community.
